The 2020 Summer Festival will open on Saturday 25 July with an all-Italian cast to pay homage to italian musical scene, wounded and bent by the Covid-19 virus but eager to restart, to celebrate the great tradition of “bel canto”, in the name of the quality and tradition that has characterized our Arena for a century. This event was also conceived to thank those all the First Responders that during these hard months have fought day and night to save lives. 31 Italian artists including Francesco Meli, Saimir Pirgu, Roberto Aronica, Fabio Armiliato, Barbara Frittoli, Eleonora Buratto, Luca Salsi, Leo Nucci, Daniela Barcellona, Michele Pertusi and Katia Ricciarelli, will perform on a stage at the center of the Arena, an unusual layout that will make the entire Festival even more unforgettable.
On 31 July, Mozart’s Requiem will be directed by Marco Armiliato, with Vittoria Yeo, Sonia Ganassi, Saimir Pirgu and Alex Esposito, with the spirit of a salute and a last farewell to the victims of the pandemic.
After less than 24 hours, on 1st August, Anna Netrebko, Yusif Eyvazov, Daniela Barcellona and Ambrogio Maestri will perform in “The stars of the Opera” in what will be a real rebirth celebration in the name of art, the comeback of the international breath that has always made the Arena a main destination for opera fans from all over the world.
A tribute to Wagner directed by Gustav Kuhn in on schedule for Friday 7 August: it will be a kind of anticipation of next summer’s Festival, in which Jonas Kaufmann will debut bringing the great composer from Leipzig to the Arena stage.
On 8 and 22 August it will be the turn of two gala respectively dedicated to Verdi and Puccini, that will see the return to the Arena of Maestro Daniel Oren and our fellow veronese conductor Andrea Battistoni. Furthermore, a gala dedicated to Rossini is scheduled for August 14, starring the soprano Lisette Oropesa, esteemed Rossini interpreter, the young South African tenor Levy Sekgapane, baritones Alessandro Corbelli and Marco Filippo Romano, and bass Roberto Tagliavini.
There will also be an integral execution of Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons: on August 13, right in the heart of the Festival schedule, the young Venetian violinist Giovanni Andrea Zanon is expected to perform together with the strings of the Arena’s Orchestra.
And there is more: on 21 August Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi”, an opera that has never been performed before in the Arena, will go on stage with Leo Nucci in the main role.
Two appointments with living legend Plácido Domingo, a milestone of Arena’s festivals, will be the triumphant conclusion: a first show on August 28 that will star Maestro Domingo next to the beautiful Spanish voice of Saioa Hernández, and then on the final evening on August 29 with Maestro Domingo also in the unusual role of director, and with the international diva Sonya Yoncheva and the Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo.
The Arena Foundation, for the wel known safety reasons, has only numbered seats for sale, setting prices below the usual, from 34.00 to 199.00 euros.
We are grateful to all those who have worked and are working to allow us to look ahead and thus find ourselves tomorrow with a stronger Arena, ambassador of Italian excellence in the world.
As Ezio Bosso, the beloved director who left us a few weeks ago, would say, life is a wonderful music, music is a wonderful life.
The Colomba d’Oro is the four star hotel closest to the Arena: we are waiting for you, to enjoy a comfortable and luxurious rest, in complete safety, after an evening of great music!
