Arena Opera season kicks off!

The 97th edition of Verona’s Arena Opera Festival will be inaugurated on Friday 21 June and will include 49 shows with great international artists.
La Traviata, the most known and represented opera in the world, will kick off the Verona opera season and will be revived on June 28th, 11th, 19th and 25th July: in August, Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece will delight Arena’s audience the 1, 8, 17, 22 and 30. The last performance is scheduled for September 5.
The historical 1913 edition of Aida, directed by Veronese screenwriter Gianfranco De Bosio, debuts as usual in the second evening of the Festival, on June 22nd, and will be the closing show on September 7th. It will be performed on other 14 dates, ie June 27th, 5th, 9th, 12th, 21st, 24th and 28th July and, in August, the 3rd, the 9th, the 18th, the 25th, the 28th and the 31, and on September 3rd.
The third opera by Verdi on this edition’s schedule, Il Trovatore, directed by the great Franco Zeffirelli, will go on stage on 29 June and 4, 7, 20 and 26 July. The first three of these five performances will be enhanced by the performance of the famous soprano Anna Netrebko, who will play Lenora.
Starting from 6 July, for 10 dates, Bizet’s Carmen will be on stage under the direction of Hugo de Ana. The 10th, 13th, 18th, 23rd and 27th of July, the 2nd, the 24th and 27th of August and the 4th of September the audience will witness this timeless story, told and animated by the colors of twentieth century’s Spain.
Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca will be back on stage starting August 10th for 5 dates: August 16th, 23rd and 29th and, finally, September 6th.
Browsing through this summer’s Arena schedule, you will notice three special shows in which three internationally known artists will perform in the most admired theater in the world. Any artist, at least once in their life, dreams of being able to perform on this stage!
Roberto Bolle, Étoile of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and Main Dancer of the American Ballet Theater in New York, returns to Verona with with his most wanted show Roberto Bolle and Friends: on 16 and 17 July the Arena will be crowded with fans of the dance and ballet that will enjoy the skill and grace of international dance stars.
On August 4 the Plácido Domingo 50 Arena Anniversary Night will be staged: the Spanish baritone, engaged on this occasion in three Verdi operas, will celebrate his fifty years of performances in Verona’s Arena, where he debuted in La Turandot and the Don Carlo.
Last but not least, Ezio Bosso, an Italian pianist and composer, will have his personal debut in the Arena di Verona with Orff’s Carmina Burana: On August 21st, medieval musical poetry will resound in our amphitheater for the third time.
