Via Sottoriva, a gem of the most authentic Verona near the Colomba d’Oro

A few steps from the Colomba d’Oro and the Verona Arena you can enjoy a little walk in Via Sottoriva, one of the most charming streets in the historic center of Verona: it preserves the medieval atmosphere intact, with its cobblestone pavement and above all with its porticos, which immediately take you back to a distant era between the Middle Ages and Renaissance (the same era in which the building that now houses the Colomba d’Oro was built). A walk here is like a journey through time.
The road under the bank
Via Sottoriva is called this because it is located « sotto la riva », which means “under the bank” with respect to the bank of the Adige River : originally – before the embankments were built at the end of the nineteenth century – it was a street that ran behind a port on the river (which was once navigable), with a descent towards a beach with an arched walkway. This is why in the past centuries it was subject to frequent floodings. This part of Verona became a productive hub thanks to the presence of numerous water mills: the force of the river was in fact exploited to grind wheat, transforming this area into a “factory” of flour for the city market.
Porticoes, columns and glimpses of past times
The main feature of Via Sottoriva is the long portico that runs along the entire side of the road opposite the river, an architectural element very common in other cities in the Veneto region (especially in Venice and Padua), but present only in this street in the historic center of the city of the Colomba d’Oro. Its columns, all different from each other, bear witness to the numerous renovations that have taken place over the centuries.
Hidden under these porticoes you will find mainly traditional taverns, welcoming cafes and typical restaurants that serve the authentic local cuisine, but also some furniture and antique shops. There is no shortage of artistic testimonies: a Renaissance door, a Madonna with Child sculpted on the facade of a house, details that speak silently to the most attentive traveler.
Towards the Adige River
The northern end of the street is dominated by the imposing apses of the Basilica of Santa Anastasia, one of the most important Gothic masterpieces in Verona as well as the largest church in the city; right after it the street flows into Piazzetta Brà Molinari, a small quiet square with big shady trees and benches where you can stop and contemplate a breathtaking view: Castel San Pietro, the Roman Theater, the Ponte Pietra and, of course, the slowly flowing waters of the Adige.
A leap into the Verona of yesterday
Via Sottoriva is a perfect place to relax, take photos or simply breathe in the beauty of ancient Verona. It is a special corner, not far from the busiest streets between Piazza Brà and Piazza delle Erbe, but with a cozy atmosphere, almost suspended in time.
